More about excess hair
What is excess hair?
Excessive hair growth is a symptom of excessive or unwanted hair growth. Many people today want to get rid of their body hair, which in some cases grows excessively. Excessive hair is often cosmetic, but sometimes it can also be medically problematic. This can lead to ingrown hairs, itching, bumps, and skin irritations.
Hirsutism and hypertrichosis are two forms of excessive hair growth. They often occur separately, but a combination of hirsutism and hypertrichosis can also occur. Hypertrichosis is the form of excessive hair growth that affects both men and women. This involves hair growth in areas where there is normally no or thin hair, or an expansion of an area where hair growth is normally present.
What is hirsutism?
Hirsutism is a form of excessive hair growth in women where hair growth is increased in line with the male pattern, such as facial hair growth, limbs, pubic hair growth, and chest hair growth. There are various forms of hirsutism, with different factors playing a role.
- Familial hirsutism: the level of male hormones is not elevated, but there is a genetic cause. However, we often see an increase in the amount of male hormones in the hair follicle. This form of excessive hair growth often begins during puberty.
- Hormonal hirsutism: elevated male hormone levels are overproduced in the adrenal cortex and ovaries. This form of hirsutism is associated with PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) and other symptoms such as acne, menstrual irregularities, and other symptoms of masculinization also occur. If you suspect PCOS, you can request a referral to a gynecologist.
- Hirsutism caused by certain medications. This includes anabolic steroid use or testosterone-related drugs.
Treating excess hair
For excessive hair growth, many hair removal methods like shaving, waxing, plucking, and IPL are often labor-intensive and ineffective in the long term. At Clinique Elixir, you can experience laser therapy with our hair removal laser. Laser therapy is highly effective for various types of excessive hair growth. With the GentleMax Pro, you'll be rid of your excess hair in no time.
Skin scan and intake
During the initial consultation, the nature of your complaint will be discussed with the practitioner so that a personalized treatment plan can be created. A good treatment plan begins with a skin analysis using the Observ520 skin scanner. The skin therapist can provide a detailed analysis of the deeper layers of the skin. You will also receive advice on products to use at home to support and optimize the treatment. The scan results are stored and compared so we can monitor the progress of the treatment.
